Based in the Ansitz Albersheim, a beautiful aristocrat's residence which in its present form dates from the 16th century, the Galerie Nothburga has been an active centre for artistic enterprises for over 30 years. It was founded under the name of "Ynnsprucker Werkstatt" in 1979; in 1995 the artist and art teacher Elfriede Gerber took over and changed the name to "Galerie Nothburga".
The gallery nowadays plays an eminent role in Innsbruck's cultural life. It is run by a group of artists and financially supported by the Provincial Government, the City Council as well as by the society of "Friends of the Galerie Nothburga". It presents a wide range of artists, in order to:
- help young, yet unknown artists to start a career
- show the work of interesting outsiders
- show the work of artists still unknown in the region
- combine the works of succesful artists with those of newcomers
- organise retrospectives
The Ansitz Albersheim, completed in 1561, has essentially preserved its original character and was renovated in the 1970s. The gallery's main room still gives a feeling of the surroundings that a renaissance nobleman chose to live in. Its unique atmosphere stimulates personal encounters between artists and visitors.
In addition to the regular exhibitons, from time to time writers and musicians are invited to present their work.
